The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in collaboration with the Japanese recycling firm JIT Yamanashi India Pvt Ltd on Friday launched the facility of e-waste recycling boxes for commuters to dispose of their used printer ink bottles and cartridges.

This significant facility towards environmental sustainability was formally launched in a ribbon cutting ceremony held at Hauz Khas Metro station by SUZUKI Hiroshi, Ambassador of Japan to India along with Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director, DMRC in the presence of other senior officials from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and DMRC.

These recycling boxes in a set of two each have been installed at 15 prominent interchange metro stations, encouraging commuters to dispose of their used printer ink bottles and cartridges for further recycling.

These stations are- Welcome, Kashmere Gate, Netaji Subhash Place, Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar (non interchange station), New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Delhi Haat-INA, Hauz Khas, Dwarka, Janakpuri West, Rajouri Garden, Mandi House, Yamuna Bank, and Lajpat Nagar.

The boxes are placed in the paid area of each station, making it a convenient way for the commuters to deposit their used printer ink bottles and cartridges, promoting a culture of recycling and sustainability.

This initiative which showcases DMRC’s commitment to environmental responsibility and encourages commuters to contribute to the cause is being funded by JICA as part of their Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) related initiatives. The collected e-waste will be responsibly recycled, reducing the harmful impact on the environment.

This facility has come up as part of an MoU which was signed last month between the DMRC and JIT Yamanashi India Pvt Ltd. to encourage responsible disposal habits among the commuters and help in making a positive impact on the environment. Based on the feedback of this initiative, the facility will be extended to all other major metro stations across the network in a phased manner in coming months.
